2011: Fitness Review

My totals for 2011:

Motivation to continue!!

2002 – 2012: A Decade of Fitness!

Yes, it’s true. 2012 will mark my tenth year of fitness.

I can still remember cycling to downtown from Coach Hill on my hybrid bike along the Bow River. Winter mornings would be so cold coming down Edworthy Park hill from Bow Trail that I’d lose sensation in my hands for a few minutes. It was a dark and bumpy ride down the steep slope towards the river’s edge but once you were on the swept path, it was smooth sailing right into downtown.

During the summer months, the path became a smaller version of the Deerfoot with all kinds of crazy cyclists passing one another on narrow sections without a warning nor a care. And no matter which direction you were heading, you’d always be fighting the wind.

The cycling was followed by running in the spring of 2002 with my participation in the Stampede Road Race relay. I’d never run before and the race was quite a trial. Knowing nothing about pacing, breathing, stretching and synthetic fabric, my first year was filled with pain! But it wasn’t enough to keep me from signing up for my first half marathon in the fall of that same year. The Vancouver Marathon followed in May 2003 and the rest is history.

And now after many, many races from 5K to Marathons to Olympic Triathlons, I’ve learned a lot about these sports and myself and continue to do so every time I go out.

Here’s what the logbook shows:
Total Distance” 25,220 km in 1985 hours and a speed of 12.8 kph, I spent 1.3 million calories! Interesting and encouraging numbers. Let’s see what the next ten years will bring!

Basically, that’s equivalent to running around the earth at the equator in 83 days!
